CHIEF Duty Calculation Problem

CHIEF Duty Calculation Problem : 5th October 2007

Late yesterday afternoon it became apparent we have an intermittent fault where CHIEF is calculating duty and VAT incorrectly, on Customs import declarations submitted from Friday 28th September 2007. This is restricted to those entries quoting Commodity Codes subject to US Retaliatory Duty, whether or not the goods covered by the declaration are subject to that duty.

If you have submitted an import declaration since 28th September with a Commodity Code on the attached list, it is important you take steps to ensure the accuracy of the duty and VAT calculation on your entry. We recommend that you:

Check the VAT and duty calculations on potentially affected declarations already submitted and accepted by CHIEF to ensure accuracy.

For uncleared or entries to be submitted, any errors should be corrected by the CHIEF amendment transaction using the manual tax override (DTY) against the appropriate tax type on your declaration. This means you will not need to make a subsequent repayment claim or receive a demand for additional payment.

For cleared entries we will be issuing further guidance next week, advising on procedures for both repayments and requests for additional payments.

We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause you, and assure you that this matter is being treated with the utmost urgency. Our suppliers are working closely with us to ensure a satisfactory solution is implemented as soon as possible. We will advise you again when the defect fix is in place on CHIEF.

If you have any queries on the content of this note, please contact HMRC CHIEF Operations at chief.operations@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk However, please do not contact us to ask us for checks on VAT or duty calculations for you. All resources are currently focused on implementing and testing the proposed solution to the fault and enquiries on SAD H dual running.
